Africa is commonly referred to as the Motherland because it has been home to people for over 5 million years making it the oldest inhabited continent in the world! Africa is the second largest continent and consists of over 54 countries. Africa consists of many different cultures and tribes. Over 3,000 ethnic groups and 1,000 – 2,000 languages are spoken in Africa.
Many people don’t know that the length and breadth of the continent are almost the same. Horizontal Width: 4,355 miles (7,009 km) from Dakar, Senegal, east to Mogadishu, Somalia and Vertical Length: 4,504 miles (7,248 km) from Cape Town, South Africa north to Tripoli, Libya.
Africa is known for its jungles, safaris and having the biggest, tallest, and fastest animals. It is also home to the Sahara Desert, the largest and hottest desert in the World. Another fun fact is that the oldest University in the world is in Africa, University of Karueein, in Fez, Morocco in 859 AD.
Africa is full of beauty, riches, and wealth, and Mansa Musa, the tenth emperor of the Mali Empire is one of the richest men in history whose worth converted to between $300-400 billion USD in the 1930’s.
